5 DIY Tips for Taking Care of Wood Furniture

Did you know that you could pass down your wood furniture through multiple generations if you follow proper care instructions? Even the highest wood quality furniture is susceptible for abrasions, scratches due rough handling, and negligence. This applies for any piece of furniture or accessories that is constructed entirely or partially from wood. However, with some precautions and proper care, you can make your wood furniture last a lifetime – ornamental or simple, new or old -endure for generations to come. Here are some troubleshooting tips to take care of your wooden furniture:

1. To remove stains

• Chalk white stains can be minimized or eliminated.
• Apply toothpaste (not gel) with a clean cloth and rub gently on the back of the grain. Clean with a wet cloth, then dry.
• If toothpaste does not work, gently rub this place with mineral spirits and #0000 steel wool.
• Or, try tying the stain with a thick layer of petroleum jelly and leave it there for 48 hours. The jelly should be soaked in stains and even dyed.

2. To hide marks and scratches

• Scratches and scars can also be molded in many ways.
• Use a wax polish. This product was purchased through wood color, such as “light oak” or “dark oak.” Apply it in a two-step routine. Since it is a thick liquid or a soft paste, protect the floor or carpet by dropping cloth in the case of a spray.

• To remove buildup, use a wooden cleaner – not a stripper – to regain original shine. Wooden cleaners combine a light solvent with oil to dissolve and lift buildup polish and dirt.
• Use a commercial or make your own by mixing one-part vinegar or two parts of vegetable oil (olive or lemon oil) with lemon juice.
• Apply it with a soft cloth and wipe it clean.

4. To remove the buildup of grease

• Vegetable oil-based cleaners will dissolve the grease and accumulated soil on your wood without causing any harm.
• Apply and wipe only with a clean cloth.
• Repeat if necessary.
• When the wood is clean, rinse it with a damp cloth, then wipe the dry cloth dry.

5. Wiping up spills

• Clean it as soon as possible, especially acidic drinks (soft drinks or fruit juice) or alcohol.
• Wipe with a clean cloth that is dry or slightly moist.
• For sticky spots or dry residues, use a mild soap and water solution, but avoid removing wood.
• Follow with a clean damp cloth and then wipe with a dry wood grain.
